Discussion, critique and fannish obsession over the works of Joss Whedon and his band of merry geniuses

Truths My Mutant Enemy Told Me

First and foremost, let me just say that that was one of the creepiest
episodes in a long time. Now I don't mean creepy as in skin-crawling,
bloody creepies, I mean creepy as in it just, well for lack of a better
word, creeped me out.

William and his mother? And then his mother's return and subsequent
creepiness? Wow! I mean, I never pegged Spike for a momma's boy,
but go figure. Meanwhile, it was nice to see Juliet Landau's return as
Dru. I've missed her.

As for the rest of the story, we've hit an intensity which, I think, is more
appropriate to what is going on. To have Giles defy Buffy (for her own
good) harkens back to the old days of the Slayer/Watcher dynamic. It
would be interesting (although it has been eluded to that this wouldn't
happen) to see how they would influence future Watcher/Slayer
relationships.

Anyway, I was pleased to see Willow duck out gracefully, with little
fanfare. It sets her return up to be a grand event. I was also glad to
see Buffy start to get tired of her own lecturning. "Last night I gave an
inspiration speech to the pizza delivery guy!" or something equally
funny. It's cool when a character can get tired of just spinning her own
wheels.

And kudos to Principal Wood for being one heckuva gentleman. It
speaks to his inner good that he wanted to confront Spike The Monster
vs. Spike The Man.

We are left with an interesting question, though. Can Spike hold out?
I mean, look at Angel. I don't believe that he would kill a human being,
unless it meant saving the world. Heck, he wouldn't even consider
killing Connor after what he did to his Dad. This speaks to his
humanity and desire for redemption. Spike, on the other hand, has
vowed that he would kill Robin if he tried something again. This, to
me, proves that Spike has no such compunction. He just may one
day revert. Then again, I may just be taking the whole thing too
literally.
