Discussion, critique and fannish obsession over the works of Joss Whedon and his band of merry geniuses

A Hard Day's Night

Well, that was one heckuvan episode. Beginning to end, it was a pretty darn good romp.

I have to admit, though, that is is starting to seem like the good folks at ANGEL are also channeling their inner MARVEL/DC characters. Alluva sudden we have SUPERHEROES as our characters? I mean, this may not be totally unheard of, but it is getting a little creepy. Especially from a network with a big show in the form of SMALLVILLE and a now defunct show in the way of BIRDS OF PREY (which ANGEL has replaced) which are both SUPERHERO shows. I know someone who may say that I am reading WAAAAY too much into this, but it (like my earlier FOREVER KNIGHT rant) is just something that has been brought to my mind. It doesn't diminish my enjoyment of our M.E. programs, either.

I am impressed with the ever expanding mythology of Angel/Angelus. We have been provided with a great many versions of how these two have existed in history. Angel, for example, was a waste of undead flesh who drifted around the world after regaining his soul. It wasn't until he was shown Buffy that he made the decision that he wanted to do something with himself. And yet one of the best throwaway lines this season showed that Angel was composed enough to hang with the Rat Pack. Hmmmmmmm. Also, while it has been admitted that Angelus was one of the biggest bads (vampire-wise) to walk the earth, he was also ONLY a vampire. And yet now, we are introduced to the concept that Angelus might have had prior experiences with this year's big bad, and that he might be the key to stopping him. This big, unstoppable force that nothing can stop...... Hmmmmmmmm.

Now, obviously he has to be stopped, I just almost feel that this week's vortex resolution might have worked better. Then again, I thought I learned to just trust Joss's instincts. We shall ultimately see.

This week's romp was filled with the prerequisite cool moments which have become the trademark of M.E.'s productions. Cordelia's confrontation with Angel was nice. "Get over it!" "Get over it....why didn't I think of that! It's so easy. 'Get over it.'" A nice moment. I still can't get over Connor calling Angel "Dad." It's kinda cool and kinda spooky at the same time. I can't help but feel like he's gonna say "dad" one day right before he rams a stake into Angel's chest. Then again, this could also be an attempt to endear him to us just in time for him to get killed with the big bad. Most importantly, I can't wait for Connor to meet Angelus. That should be interesting. More so than ever, it will be the time for Connor to meet the man who killed his father. Coool.

Anyhoo, praise abounding for this week's entry. I am appropriately tantalized for next week, which I'm sure will be an episode to remember.
