Discussion, critique and fannish obsession over the works of Joss Whedon and his band of merry geniuses

Well, color me confused

First, let's talk about SHINDIG. I liked Brian's rundown of the episode. It was pretty concise and mostly, I agree with it. I have to say, though, that the episode left me feeling a bit disappointed.

Jane Espenson is a great writer, and this script was dripping with all the hallmarks of her wonderful work. Mal and Inara left me a little confused, however. When discussing OUT OF GAS, I likened their relationship to GUINAN/PICARD from Star Trek: The Next Generation. While I didn't say it was EXACTLY like that, I at least saw some similarity in the way they treated eachother. After watching SHINDIG, I'm not so sure. Obviously, it appears that Mal has feelings for Inara, and that his rough and tumble nature makes it hard for him to admit these things. However, they seem to be vacillating between friendship and apathy. Now I know that love can be like that (did I use the "L" word?) but I think we're taking too broad strokes for characters that we seem to be focusing on every week. If you want to do this, let it flow over time. It almost seems as though the writing staff in general don't know where they want htese characters to be and are just arbitrarily putting them wherever they want.

Otherwise......I liked it.

Supersymmetry...........I don't know. It was certainly evocative. I just think....and I find it hard to believe that I would do this, but I want to use this article as an example.

When Joss and his "band of merry geniuses" can make Christians enjoy the programs, you know they are doing something right. To uphold the standards of my friend Brian, I will not go into detail, but I will say this. The above article cites the fact that when people do bad things, they pay the consequences and change over time. It seems, however, that more and more people are not being properly punished for their crimes, based on their popularity. This is not to say that I wish that Willow had not been absolved, but if you are going to have principles, you have to uphold them no matter what.

I hope that SUPERSYMMETRY is not an opportunity for us to be let down in this respect. Our character did a bad, bad thing. And I think that he should be properly punished for it. I trust everyone that the next few weeks will be anything but normal, but it had better be significant.

That being said, I hope that this season is not going to suffer from the same problems that last season's BUFFY suffered from (i.e. too much depressing stuff.)

All in all, the show was done well otherwise. I'm just not sure how I'm going to feel about it until I see it in the broader world of what will happen as a result.
