Discussion, critique and fannish obsession over the works of Joss Whedon and his band of merry geniuses

Slouching Towards Quality

In short, Brian summed the show up pretty well. I have to say that USA Today was correct in pointing to ANGEL as being one of the best kept secrets of the season.

This week's ep was top notch in most respects. As always, though, I do have a few points of criticism. I tend to think of these shows in two ways: STORY ARCS and MOMENTS.

STORY ARCS pertain to the progression of the story and the characters within their arcs for the season, or for the show. MOMENTS are those wonderful points in any given show when the audience is given instant gratification for watching.

The show was rich with moments. Connor coming to Cordy's rescue, the hilarity that ensued when the group had to explain Cordy's life to her, Wesley and Lilah in bed (which always provide nice moments.)

The story arcs are working nicely too. I am a little tired of Wesley's angst though. I hope that as I grow tired of it, he will as well and that maybe he will soon return to the fold. It was a nice run while it lasted, but I think that arc should end soon.

Lorne's premonitions of what is to come were nice and frustrating. Watching the episode, I wanted to reach into the TV and smack him, just so that I could find out what is going to happen next (hallmark of a good show.) As to Brian's mention of Lorne's bitter side, I really hadn't noticed, but I wouldn't be surprised. Especially after all that he has been through. Although, it could also have been that he had just gotten some really bad news and then gotten a hole in his head.

On the whole, I can't really stand amnesiac shows, however Joss and co. have provided good shows in this format. Buffy and the Scoobies being trapped in the magic shop with amnesia was one of the coolest and best handled episodes ever, because it was real. Cordelia having amnesia was handled much the same way, and that's what I like. She doesn't automatically switch sides because she can't remember things, she isn't seduced by the dark side. Her only choices were made based on who was leveling with her. I like that. Although, I have to say that if the promo is correct and Cordy and Connor get it on, all I can say is GREAT SHADES OF FARSCAPE!!!!!

Random Thought: I wonder what Farscape would have been like if Joss had been at the helm......

Back to the original rant. Looking forward to see how ANGEL plays out.

As for a lack of new Buffy tonight, I suppose it had to happen sometime. *sigh*
